Google – Advertising Platform?

In response to an Anonymous comment to my SES Post, I just have to say that you might call Google an advertising platform, but then what is the diff between a media company and an advertising platform. Soon, Google will be on the set top boxes that project images onto your TV. I believe it is a modern day media company and the biggest threat to Yahoo and Microsoft. Just ask anyone who works at those two companies and they will tell you that. So Yahoo and Google are both in the same business, except Yahoo is constantly catching up to Google. That being said, I want to emphasize that Yahoo is a cheap stock.

No arguments to your comment about eBay being an auction platform. Amazon though, is a glorified retailer. Plain and simple.

I am currently long Yahoo and Google, and short Amazon.

    Google just bought a radio network to round out product offerring, but i wonder if
    Tivo with the patented new May 2006 advertising features similiar to internet servers will appeal to Google.

    The difference between an “advertising platform” and a “media company” is obvious to me.

    Yahoo is a media company…their efforts go to generating content (through partnerships, social media, etc) and attracting eyeballs to view, and add to, that content. Their value to users is as an aggregator of content and supporting services. That is why they brought in the CEO they did.

    Google is an advertising platform – they have made their money and will continue to do so by serving advertisements into various mediums. Of course the windfall they’ve generated in earnings allows them to dabble in various stuff, but it’s the advertising platform that drives their success and will continue to do so.

    Yahoo may attempt to compete with Google in the advertising platform area, but it is likely a mistake IMO.
